Networking issue after upgrading to AccountRight 2016.3.0

After upgrading to AccountRight 2016.3.0 today the computer in the office running the PC version cannot access the company file.  It is saying that the server edition needs to be installed on the server but I have confrimed that the server edition is installed on our server.  I have gone through the steps on the 'AccountRight library service issues' worksheet with no luck.  Any help would be appreciated as I don't really want to sit on the phone for hours to reach technical support.

Hi @Gleda

I see from your account that you have spoken with the technical support team in regards to the message you have received.

Based on the notes on your account it does look like you have successfully install AccountRight 2016.3 on all computers (with the relevant version). It seems that you were getting blocked by a particular password when trying to access the server from the computer, this could be a possible reason as to why you are getting that message. Its recommend that you investigate that and speak to an IT person in regards to that password appearing.

If you do require further assistance don't hesitate to let us know. I'm sure the MYOB Community would be happy to assist.

Re: Networking issue after upgrading to AccountRight 2016.3.0

We can see the file on the network with File Explorer, and can view the properties and even right click on the file, yet Myob cannot see it. Myob tech support leaves a lot to be desired, as it seems to consist of a back-packer reading a list from a page. One seriously wonders why we pay $1000 per year for this. Our system has been down all day at one of the busiest times of the year, and we are pulling our hair out. It was fine until Myob updated, and now only one pc can access the company file.

Re: Networking issue after upgrading to AccountRight 2016.3.0

Well, after being told by tech support that it was a networking issue and not the fault of Myob, we have uninstalled the latest version and gone back to 2016.2.2. Miraculously, everything now works. We will have to re-enter all of yesterdays work, but at least we have more than one PC able to network to the file.

This was a very costly exercise for us...

Re: Networking issue after upgrading to AccountRight 2016.3.0

Hello @Gleda

I'm glad to hear that you've been able to access you're file after reverting to a previous version. I'm sorry you haven't been able to access your file in the new version. What you've described is consistent with a file accessed across a network, where the server doesn't have the correct version installed.

Even though you can see the file in file explorer, this doesn't mean that you can open it in AccountRight. AccountRight isn't looking for a file. It's looking for a copy of the software installed on the server (more specifically it's looking for a service run by that software). The information you've been given is correct. When you install the update you need to install the update on all of the workstations using the software (the PC edition will be fine). In addition to this the update needs to be installed on the server as well (the server edition needs to be used here). Please note copying or accessing files using Windows explorer on another machine won't do this. You need to be able to access the operating system on the server itself (rather than the operating system on any work station). This may involve remoting in using virtual desktop software, or physically attaching a keyboard and monitor to the server. This is something you'd need to check with whoever setup or maintains your network. This isn't required for online files. Please note that this is only necessary for files accessed across a local area network.

Kind Regards

Re: Networking issue after upgrading to AccountRight 2016.3.0

Liam, the second post in this thread confirms that the correct editions were installed on each machine. Our network is a very simple setup, consisting of two PC's in a Windows 10 netrwork. Both PC's were updated to 2016.3 with the "server" PC updated to the server edition. All of the required services were running on the server. We started and stopped them several times to check. We uninstalled and reinstalled 2016.3 several times. We removed all previous versions of Myob from both PC's. Nothing we tried would work. We then brought in an IT company who checked all of our network settings and services and found nothing wrong. There view is that it is definitely Myob. We uninstalled 2016.3 from all machines and downloaded an installed 2016.2.2 on all machines and everything now works. Nothing was changed between running the two versions, yet 2016.2.2 works fine and 2016.3 does not.

Re: Networking issue after upgrading to AccountRight 2016.3.0

Hi there @Gleda,

It's great to hear that you're able to access your company file using v2016.2 again, although I'm sorry the installation process to v2016.3 was not very successful.

I'm a little curious as to what error message you were getting regarding this 'getting blocked by a password' issue.

While the process you've outlined otherwise sounds more or less correct in setting up a network, I'd love some clarification as to what exactly you mean when you say you 'cannot access the company file'. For instance, when you went to Open a company file > Network Libraries > clicked into the network > could you see your company file in the company files list, or did it not appear at all? If it did appear, did you get an error message when double-clicking on it?

On one last note, have you also tried deleting and re-adding the network library?

Warm Regards,

Tallie

Re: Networking issue after upgrading to AccountRight 2016.3.0

The 'getting blocked by a password' issue is a non issue as we were able to solve that but it did not solve our networking issue with AccountRight 2016.3.0

In saying that we cannot access the company file we mean that when we went to Open a company file > Network Libraries > clicked into the network > we could not see our company file in the company files list.  A message would then appear saying that the server edition is not installed on the server even though is has been confirmed that the server edition is in fact installed.

Yes we tried deleting the network library and re-adding it but it could not find the network library.

How is it possible that we are able to completely reinstall 2016.2 and get it networking correctly but when we try to install 2016.3 in EXACTLY the same way we installed 2016.2 it will not network???

Re: Networking issue after upgrading to AccountRight 2016.3.0

Hi @Gleda

When you create or link to a network library AccountRight requires the use of a couple of Windows services in the connection. One of these services the MYOB AccountRight Server Locator is generic to all versions of the AccountRight Server Edition. However, another service is also created and specific to the version, which is MYOB AccountRight Server 201X.X, where X.X refer to the specific version such as AccountRight 2016.2 & 2016.3. If the AccountRight Server 2016.3 service was not functioning for some reason but the AccountRight Server 2016.2 service was then this could account for the discrepancy between the two versions.

If AccountRight 2016.3 cannot detect the equivalent server service, then it will assume that version isn’t installed and bring up the error message advising you that it isn’t installed.

A great trick if you are having trouble getting the network libraries working, is to setup and try and access the network library on the server machine, just as you would on the computer that doesn’t have the file on it. Whether or not the host computer accesses the file through the network library gives a great indication on where the problem lies.

If the server cannot connect to the network library, then it’s likely an issue relating to the services on the computer. In contrast if your host machine does connect and accesses the files in the network library but other computers can’t then it would be a network related issue, such as a firewall or antivirus program limiting access to that file across the network.

Neil

Re: Networking issue after upgrading to AccountRight 2016.3.0

Hi Neil_M,

Thanks for these tips.  I'm no computer expert but what I have discovered is that 2016.2 installs allowing access through the windows firewall to a private network by default whereas 2016.3 installs without allowing access to a private network (but does allow access to a public network).  By ticking the allow access to a private network in the windows firewall setttings 2016.3 now networks correctly.
