Instructions for New Users
Instructions - Kudos
There is a system on the forum that is called Kudos. The point of this is to allow users to recognize individuals that have helped them with a issue by rewarding them for that help.
Under the avatar (user name and picture) that appears on each post there is a small picture of a white star with a yellow border.
By clicking on the star you add one Kudos point to the level of Kudos that person has. This shows your appreciation for the help and it also serves as a requirement for gaining rank within the forum. Because of this we encourage you to use this system whenever you feel you have been helped sufficiently to warrant it.
Instructions - Accepted Solutions
A question on a forum can receive many replies. Often the solution is added to and refined throughout the post and other times one post stands out as clearly the correct answer to the question.
When we have a answer that covers all the bases of the question we can use the Accepted Solutions button. This option creates a link to the Accepted Solution from the original post so it is very easy for other users to click this link and go straight to the answer for a question they may have themselves.
This saves a lot of time when searching for the correct answer and it allows the forum to stay relevant to any user. It is the responsibility of the original poster whether or not to accept a solution.
Accepted Solutions acknowledge the fact that the answer given is correct. Where the Kudos is generally a more personal thank you to the person that helped, the Accepted Solution allows that help to spread to the rest of the user base and anyone coming to the site in the future looking for that answer.
Instructions - Tagging
On the bottom of the posts there is a small text link called Add Tag.
And after it is clicked
When this link is clicked it opens a text field and enables you to type into it. The purpose if this is to create Key Words or Tags on the post to allow the forum to index the posts more efficiently. This allows greater functionality in the index and faster more accurate searching.
Instructions - Posting
Posting is what a forum is all about. Either you're posting to have others answer and help you or you are posting in response to a question to help someone else. The how to of posting is fully covered in the Help menu item so I will not go into it in great depth here. It is important to have a pre-determined number of posts along with the other methods for reward and recognition in order to gain rank on the forum.
Tips When Posting Support Requests
When posting help requests remember that it's important to include some key information this will ensure all users know what product your referring to:
Instructions - Ranking
This forum has a complex ranking system as evidenced in my post on this board showing the Badges and the available levels on each of them. The four levels on each are not difficult to understand, the complexity comes in behind the scenes and flows through into what it takes to earn each rank.
There are four forum processes that contribute to the ranks.
In all cases some or all of the above in various combinations will result in a raise in forum rank.
So I encourage everyone to learn and use these various processes which I have detailed above.
Instructions - Private Messaging (PM)
Within the forum there is the ability to send and recieve private messages. This is like a internal email system for the site.
On the top of the screen in the control bar you can see the message icon
The image above is what the message icon looks like when you have no messages to read, it is a white envelope.
And now you see a yellow envelope icon, this means you have a new message and you will see the number in the wording next to it. When you see this all you need to do is click on the icon or the words to get to your Inbox.
From there you can send new messages read old and new messages and review what you have already sent.
If a Moderator needs to contact you then the first thing we will do is send you a Private Message so it is a good idea to become familiar with this system.
