Preventing AccountRight automatic software updates.

Hi MYOB Community

MYOB has stated that its software updates are automatic, compulsory and cannot be disabled. But technically speaking, this is untrue. It is it certainly possible to disable updates.

For users of AccountRight Server (SE) edition, these two posts here and here explain the approach nicely.

If you use AccountRight desktop (PC) edition, a couple of methods are available. One method, described in this post involves copying the entire AccountRight software folder to a new location and then changing the MYOB desktop shortcut.

A simpler, more surgical method is as follows:

a) Open the folder in which MYOB is installed. Typically this will be in:

C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Local\Programs\MYOB\AccountRight

b) Inside that folder you will find a program file named Update.exe. Simply rename this program file to, say, "Update-disabled.exe". Voila! No more updates!. When AccountRight is next started, it will fail to find its auto-update program, and then carry on running the software as is.

I have successfully tested this approach since the AR 2026.3 release (PC edition).

I hope this is helpful to others. Enjoy!

  • I found the file you suggested . I'm a competent end user , not IT person and the first issue I had was my " View " wasn't set to include Hidden stuff and on my PC AppData was hidden

Next mistake trying to find it , when I opened the Local folder , I went to the MYOB folder there , rather than the Programs folder and then the MYOB in that , and the update.exe wasn't there ...

Before I realised that mistake , I went to my Desktop folder , right clicked on the MYOB icon and right clicked " open file location " which also took me to the " Account Right " Icon and it's contents including the update.exe file .

So if someone can't find their update file , that's another way to find it .

Unimpressed by how MYOB have handled this . We've been paying for the one instance , around 1 k with now down to five active entities . We've had over ten in the past , but have been unwinding our activities and now three of those are fairly low activity with a handfull of entrances each month . Will be reviewing our options

    Cheers

    Hi jonglo

Yes, that's correct. I disabled updates on my install after the 2026.3 release, and it has stayed that way ever since then.

If you want or need to run multiple versions of MYOB, or a mix of online and offline company files, then the solution posted by Liz_A elsewhere in this forum is a good alternative approach.

Note that, as users, we still need and depend on the company file confirmation service that MYOB provides. MYOB has stated here that confirmations will continue to work after 17 June - but there are no guarantees for how long.

    Enjoy!

    Hello random_nuggets

so by disabling the updates, allows me to keep using my Accountright 2026.4 without the need to go online.

  • Hi random_nuggets

That's a good option if you only need one version of MYOB. I have multiple versions for clients so the method I described from Gavin12345 allows me to create the shortcuts to different versions accordingly. Plus I can still access online versions for clients.

    Cheers
