inventory with negative values including Alphabet

I have a situation where some of my inventory is showing stupid numbers that include alphabet etc.  I see from googling the issue it requires a script to be run to correct the problem.  How do I get this done?  What is causing this to happen? What can I do to stop it from occuring it from happening in the future.  These issues stop me from entering new stock and shut the system down eg an error has occured.
