We have a client whose tax year is 1 January to 31 December and we are in the process of completing their tax return up to 31 December 2017. The problem is that the 2017 tax return has been used for the year ending 31 Dec 2016 and we are now unable to create another tax return in AE for this year.
Is it possible or will we need to do a manual return? This would be extremely painful as it is a very complex return

Unfortunately, the ATO will only accept one tax return per tax year - which of course makes it difficult when the tax year differs to the standard. While you can wait for the software for the following tax year, this will mean that you are always playing catch up and waiting for the software release. At some point you will need to do a paper return.
My suggestion would be to fill out the return for the year ending December 2017 and then print it out and lodge via paper. This will mean that this issue will not be an ongoing problem for future tax years.
