Quick tips for JobKeeper

Last updated:  28/04/2020

How do my payroll payments fit into a JobKeeper fortnight?

There is no need to change your payroll cycle and payment dates to fit with JobKeeper fortnights.

It is the payment date of your payroll inside a JobKeeper fortnight, therefore as an example

Weekly - 2 payments inside each JobKeeper fortnight

Fortnightly - 1 payment inside each JobKeeper fortnight

Monthly - 1 payment inside each JobKeeper month starting April

Extension of time to enrol for the JobKeeper scheme

The Commissioner has extended the time to enrol for the initial JobKeeper periods, from 30 April 2020 until 31 May 2020.

If you enrol by 31 May you will still be able to claim for the fortnights in April and May, provided you meet all the eligibility requirements for each of those fortnights. This includes having paid your employees by the appropriate date for each fortnight.

For the first two fortnights (30 March – 12 April, 13 April – 26 April), we will accept the minimum $1,500 payment for each fortnight has been paid by you even if it has been paid late, provided it is paid by 8 May 2020. If you do not pay your staff by this date, you will not be able to claim JobKeeper for the first two fortnights.

You can enrol and claim for JobKeeper earlier if you choose. For example, you can enrol by the end of April to claim JobKeeper payments for the two fortnights in April.

How do I report the Jobkeeper to the ATO for STP purposes?

You can now go through the Payroll Reporting Centre, to notify the ATO, when you Start and Finish processing that employee the Jobkeeper.

This is done through the JobKeeper tab of the Payroll Reporting Centre:

By using this method, it will provide the ATO with the required JOBKEEPER- START-FN code for the relevant fortnight, based on the Payment date (not period).

What are the transition arrangements for April 2020 – I’ve already recorded some/all my payroll?

If you have already paid your employees their regular pays for some or all of April without the JOBKEEPER-START-FN01 code, please go to the Payroll Reporting centre and use the Notify the ATO as soon as possible.

The ATO needs to be notified by 31 May 2020, in order for you to receive the JobKeeper subsidy payment.

For old pays that may not have the subsidy added, you will need to add a top-up amount into the JOBKEEPER TOP-UP allowance to bring them up to $3,000 for the month.

No top-ups are required for employees who have already earned $3,000 or more as their normal pay.
