Backup options for MYOB EXO Business

Hello,

I want to be able to create backups and possible restores of the data on our MYOB Exo Business (v 2016.3.1.954) server.

I saw on a few Internet pages there should be a File->Backup option, but there is no Backup option under our File menu?

What is the best way to make sure we have a restorable backup of all the MYOB data?

The reason I am asking is that we use Backup Exec and although it supposedly supports SQL database backups we recently had to restore a server and the SQL restores did not work and we lost the databases.  I don't want the same thing to happen with the MYOB server.

Is there a way to trigger a manual backup (and restore) when needed?

Thanks for any tips.

Re: Backup options for MYOB EXO Business

Hi @SomeoneOutThere

MYOB EXO Business uses Microsoft SQL databases, the following article explains how to use MS Management Studio to make backups

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/relational-databases/backup-restore/create-a-full-database-back...

It is recommended to make backups before any major activity such as creating a new financial period, if there was to be a power failure for example during this process your DB could become corrupt and you would want to restore a backup.

Our business partners are very familiar with creating backups, scheduling backup maintenance plans and database recovery if required, my advice would be reach out to yours should the article above raise any questions.

All the best,

Carl

Re: Backup options for MYOB EXO Business

Thanks Carl.

So there is no option available within Exo Business to do backups and restores?  It would make the job easier for the MYOB user for me to tell them "before you do any big changes or every week, please make sure you select File->Backup" and make a full backup.

If SSMS is the only option then so be it, but that is not easy for the end user who is a whiz with accounts, but a newbie with SQL.

Re: Backup options for MYOB EXO Business

Also, I went to do a backup through SQL Management, but when I checked the local folder it was going to backup to (C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\Backup) there are already daily ZIP files in there?  So is Exo already doing daily backups itself?  Is there any definite documentation for Exo Business regarding the databases and how they should be handled and what these zip files are, and most importantly how I can use them if we get a corrupted databse or hard drive crash.

You know, just those most basic and vital requirements for any server Smiley Happy

Re: Backup options for MYOB EXO Business

Hi @SomeoneOutThere ,

If you get in touch with your Exo Business partner, they should be able to set you up with an easy backup option, I'd be surprised if they didn't set either a backup plan in SQL, or some option for taking a backup, when they implemented Exo Business for you.

To be clear, there is no standard function in Exo Business that will take a database backup for you, but it is a very common option for a partner to have added during implementation.

Regarding harddrive failures, I strongly recommend getting a backup solution going to store a copy of your database backup offsite.  This prevents both obvious data problems like a Hard drive crashing, or a fire, but should also give you insurance against ransomware attacks.  Your IT provider is the right person to help you set these options up.

Cheers,
Will
