Hi @Tasland - Single Touch Payroll (STP) is a new area for all of us, including ATO staff and software companies.
So it's understandable that people might have different knowledge levels, and that advice may differ - fortunately, most contradictions are quickly resolved.
Tip: Upgrade to AccountRight 2018.2 and do the STP implementation checks now, to save time at the financial year end - when you will be busy doing the normal year-end work. With version 2018.2 you can still do your 2017-18 payment summaries and lodge your EMPDUPE file online. The new STP payroll routines only start from the pay period starting on or after 1 July.
By the way, when using Single Touch Payroll, you don't have to keep your AccountRight file online - though it's handy if you have multiple users. You can keep your file on your desktop, in Local mode. Just ensure that you have an Internet connection working, when you finish each weekly/fortnightly payroll - as the software needs an Internet connection then, to send the STP data straight away to the Australian Taxation Office (as required by the STP legislation).
