Purchases: Use of receive items with no-inventoried items

I would like to be able to use purchase orders, however notice that i can only receipt an item if it is inventoried.

I work in construction where we hire labour and plant which is not an inventoried item. for example I might hire a water cart for 120days, however get invoiced monthly, so would like to receipt 30days only. Can this setting be changed so I can receipt based on a quantity on the purchase order rather than it having to be inventoried.
