Calculating Sales Commission

Hi people.

What are the best methods for calculating sales commissions?

I can take a sales report to Excel that filters down a Sales Person's sales since they started (can be several years worth),  get that total , calculate the percentage , and minus what I've paid them so far, so see what I need to pay each month as the balance ... but there must be a better way?
