Invoice doesn't display account balance

Invoice doesn't display account balance

I have been asking for years to have the invoice dsiplay the account balance so customers can keep a tab on their balance without the need of also sending a statement.
When you are setting up custom forms there is a field called "balance" which you would presum it is account balance but its not.
it is the same as selecting "Inc Sub Total" and "Total"
I dont understand why this is not available as other accounting system have this.
Please help, this would reduce the need to bombard customers with automated statements
