Hi Mike,
I understand about the online files and have already switched over some of my client's offline files to online. However, the rest are just too small to warrant a subscription. There's no payroll, no bank feeds, just very small businesses keeping track of their transactions.
I was wondering, can I install Server Edition on another pc/ laptop and run the offline files from there? Would doing this eliminate any problems there might be with the Server Edition interfering with my current online files?
I also have a perpetual licence, original serial number, and many databases yet to be used, as well as files I have to keep for 7 years tax law. Using a laptop would actually work really well for me.
Also, how long should this process take, to put Server Edition on and transfer my files there? I have heard someone say up to 2 weeks.
Thanks.
Hi HoneySandra
You have both PC edition and Server Edition operating on the same computer/laptop which might be easier. But if you wanted to have PC edition (online) in your computer and SE (offline) on a laptop to keep them separate, that will also work just fine.
You can even provide yourself some additional safety by keeping an offline backup on both the Computer and the Laptop, that way if one of them got damaged or corrupted, you would still have another to access.
If you install both PC and SE on the same device, they have different coloured icons on the desktop to help differentiate them and you could also rename the shortcuts to something like 'Online' & 'Offline' if that helps.
Server Edition will also be perfect for just viewing an offline backup during the 7 year compliance period. It will be quick to install and open, it should work the same as your experience with PC edition.
There is a great post from another customer here which explains how to install SE and manage both offline (SE) and online (PC) files.
