Landed Cost Variance

Can anyone explain to me why some entries go to landed cost accrual/stock and some go to landed cost variance?  I cant work out any rhyme or reason for it.

If you receive the landed cost document and the associated goods are no longer in the warehouse, for example already shipped to a customer, then the land cost cannot be associated to the inventory item as its cost of goods sold was already decided at shipment, therefore the landed cost variance account is used.
