XERO + MYOB Course for a 1st Year Uni Student

Hi all,

I (24m) am starting my Bachelors in Accounting this year and am committed to this. For a bit of background I studied science for about 1.5y and did not find it appealing so I decided to try to find full time work in an alternative route. COVID hit and I am now enrolled to study Accounting and am worried I am behind everyone else being 6 years younger and entering the workforce younger, do the professionals here think I'm too old and my career is never going to go anywhere?

I've worked in hospitality and admin jobs (data entry using MYOB?) and would like to find a casual / part time job that's related to my field (Assitant accountant, Bookkeeping, Interning?). Eventually I want to be able to intern in a big firm (Bank or Accounting - Is this really necessary for securing a good job post grad, from what I'm reading it is) to get into a grad program.

In the meantime I've been looking at ways to advance my skills, and am worried I won't be able to find related jobs because I have no 'credible' skills on my CV. I want to do this course (80 hours over 6 months) that will give me training and a certificate in Xero and MYOB but I'm wandering if it's worth it when I'm just beginning my degree, will an employer think I've lost that knowledge when I graduate 3 years from now (Start of 2024).

TLDR; Will a Xero + MYOB course and certificate be worth it after I graduate (Ba. Accounting).

Where you career goes realy comes down to ability, experience and opportunities.

When starting out you probably need to decide if you want to go the practice route or the company route. If you want to get into private practice you really need to do that early on. The end aim in private practice is to own your own practice either by yourself or with partners. In that situation you are running a business and you could work in tax, audit, bussiness services, insolvincy and reconstruction etc.

I wouldn't worry about your age. Find something that you really enjoy and then learn to be the best at it.

With regard to not having experience you need to be a bit more positive and show how you can use the skills you have learnt to benefit your new organisation.  You say you have worked in hospitality. So you have had to work under preasure, had to deal with people that have been upset and resolved their problems in a positive way. You may have had to work long hours to deal with a issue such as other staff turning up so you're hard working and dependable. You might have been in charge of a team so you have some leadership skills. How did you train new team members? All these things are transferable into a new organisation and very desireable.  When you write your resume you want to give examples which show the skills you have and how they can be applied to your new organisation.

Smart people with good communication skills that work well with others can be trained. Go slow Mondays who will not get out of bed unless they get X Y and Z are avoided like the plague.

If you don't have experience you need to be humble and be willing to learn. I've interviewed so many people who basically just want to be a manager and boss others around. As you move higher up you will find that a lot of your time is spent fixing problems and doing things to get a particular result. Its really critical that you understand how things actually work so that you can make changes. You are going have people working for you saying this doesn't work how do we fix it and you know who has to fix it don't you.

Learning to use MYOB or Zero has benefits. 1) you can say you can use MYOB. 2) If you practice worked examples you will see how transactions are entered and that will reinforce your academic studies. 3) it potentially gives you the practice to do specific roles. For example you might start in Accounts Payable.
