Hi SHPreschool,
While it's expected that selecting the backup option stops the update process (it needs to close your file to do this), it's not expected that skipping the backup also stops the update. I'll get the development team to look into this.
In the meantime, try turning off the automatic backup prompt and try again. Open AccountRight, go to Setup > Preferences > Security tab and deselect the Prompt for Data Backup When Closing option. Then restart AccountRight and you should be able to update.
