I would like to add a "ship to " column to the sales register report as I do work for large builders that have multiple sites and the added information on the the report would be helpful. The field is there in customer information.

'Ship to' column isn't available for customisation in the sales register report. The available option is the 'ship via' field. You can check this link for more details about customizing reports.
