Option 1 is in principle the best solution. However this often does not work when MYOB files are involved, at least not for all employees. Some will be left with duplicate income statements.
Reason:
When notifying a previous BMSID, all employee data must match (including name, TFN and PayeeID/EmployeeID. For PayeeID/EmployeeID MYOB uses the employer card record id. And when this field is less than 4 digits, MYOB pads with leading zeroes. So if an employee has record ID 2, MYOB will report this employee as PayeeID 0002.
If your existing STP provider did the same thing, then fine, option 1 will work. However if your existing provider used Payee ID 2 or 3852d32f-537a-4240-926e-ce4979fb4d99 (like Xero does), option 1 will not work. You will need to use option 2 or 3 to avoid duplication.

Hi gilli1,
If you’ve already notified the ATO that you’re using MYOB, the next step depends on whether you want to bring over your year-to-date (YTD) payroll amounts from your old STP provider or start fresh in MYOB.
Here are the 3 options:
- Transfer the BMS ID If you’ve reported through another payroll software in the current payroll year, you can enter the previous software BMS ID in MYOB and report it to the ATO. This tells the ATO you’ve changed software and moves the YTD amounts under the new MYOB record. This is the best option if you want everything carried across in the same payroll year.
- Keep the old and new income statements separate If you don’t want to transfer YTD amounts, you can finalise the YTD figures in the old software and start from $0 in MYOB. In that case, employees will usually see two income statements, one from the old product and one from MYOB.
- Zero out the old software This is usually used when you still have access to the old software and need to clear the old YTD amounts first. The ATO says you’d send an update event from the old software showing employee YTD amounts as zero, then transfer the YTD amounts into the new software and report them there.
If you’re setting this up in MYOB and the change happened in the current payroll year, I’d usually recommend Option 1 first, as that’s the cleanest way to let the ATO know you’ve changed payroll software.
