Unfortunately, while you cannot filter a specific date period under the returns and credits tab, you can filter a specific date period under the All Sales tab which will list any credits in that date range.
For your other query, how to get a total at the end under the All Sales tab, you click on Print in the top left corner which opens the Sales Register report. This report will give you a total. You can also print that report via Reports>>Sales, it's a handy little shortcut in the Sales Register window.
