The other thing that happens each time is when I select an invoice to be sent, a message says "any changes you have made to this sale will be saved before it is emailed". This is for every invoice. The thing is, there were no changes. Just in case this has a bearing on the above.

I can see that the status of the invoices are not updating after being sent and even after clearing the cache as previously advised. You may also check this helpful article , for the detailed information on how it can be fixed.
