Hey pup44
This is a great question about Westpac accounts. We first wanted to acknowledge the great information that @Maggie provided you on chat on Monday. We hope it was helpful.
We also wanted to take the time to share information about Connected Accounts and Westpac here, for you and our other community members.
How do we connect your accounts:
The technology behind our Connected Accounts tool is called Open Banking (not bank feeds, which is a very different technology). Open banking allows you to securely share data with accredited providers, like MYOB, approved by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
We have this compatibility checker available in our Help Articles to let you see if your bank participates in Open Banking.
Does Westpac allow Open Banking?
Yes they do! But there are some restrictions, and sometimes some setup up required. There are also permission differences between personal, shared and business accounts.
If you visit this Westpac Open Banking link and scroll down to “How do I grant consent for Westpac to share my data?”, you’ll find some great information about getting set up in your online banking portal.
Last things to note:
Just dropping a few titbits here about Connected Accounts that might help make the onboarding process smoother:
- Brand-new bank accounts may not yet have permission from the bank to access the Open Banking system. If you’ve done all the setup in your online banking system and still can’t connect, wait a week.
- When chatting with your bank to establish whether your account is eligible, ensure they understand you are referring to Open Banking, not Bank Feeds, as these technologies can sometimes be confused, resulting in less accurate advice.
- In some cases, you might need to fill out a form or nominate a representative with your bank; this is especially common for shared/business accounts.
- Connected Accounts can take a few days to go live, and they require a transaction to complete the hook-up (so we recommend you don’t connect a dormant account)
