Only way I have found to get around this is the create a recurring from scratch. Open a second screen and copy & paste information across into a new recurring transaction.
I was unable to save from an invoice and unable to update from an already created recurring transaction, very frustrating.

How did you open a second screen please?

Click on the sales dropdown and right click on the recurring transactions another dropdown will open and you can select 'Open link in new window'. this will open a second screen for you to copy & paste from.
Hope this helps.
