No more server edition
The removal of AccountRight Server Edition has implications that extend far beyond simply losing another product option.
For many of us, Server Edition represented the last remaining way to maintain a true local copy of our MYOB company file. With its removal, we also lose two capabilities that have been fundamental to good IT practice for decades:
1. No More True Local Backups
A sound backup strategy has always been based on maintaining multiple independent copies of your data. Cloud storage is excellent, but it should never be the only source of truth.
If a cloud service experiences an outage, data corruption, a security incident, or even an account issue, having an offline copy of your accounting data provides a level of resilience that every business should have.
With Server Edition gone, that safety net effectively disappears.
2. No More Offline Testing
This is a point that seems to be overlooked.
Many consultants, bookkeepers and IT administrators rely on a local copy of a company file to:
- Test upgrades before applying them to production.
- Trial new integrations.
- Validate imports and exports.
- Investigate problems without affecting live data.
- Develop custom solutions safely.
Without an offline environment, every test has to occur against the live cloud file, or not at all.
That isn’t best practice.
This Isn’t About Rejecting the Cloud
Most of us understand the advantages of cloud software. Automatic updates, remote access and collaboration are all valuable features.
The concern is that users are no longer being given a choice.
Good business continuity isn’t about trusting one system completely, it’s about ensuring you can continue operating if that system is unavailable.
For many long-term MYOB users, Server Edition provided that balance.
I sincerely hope MYOB reconsiders this decision, or at the very least introduces another supported method for businesses to maintain an offline copy of their own accounting data for backup, disaster recovery and testing purposes.
These aren’t niche requirements. They are fundamental principles of responsible IT management.
