SMSF ESA amend

Hi, Hoping for some assistance.  I need to change an existing SMSF with a new ESA service.  You can't edit the existing record with a new ESA so I am trying to create a new record, however when I put in the ABN of the SMSF fund which is required it populates the correct registered name and then says the name is already in use.  How do I get around this so I can add a new SMSF with the new ESA?  I tried not putting the ABN so the registered name doesn't populate but the ABN is required?

Grateful for any help

Thanks

Heather

  • Hi Heather06

    Thanks for the update.

That “Whoops, something has gone wrong, try again later” message is just a generic online hiccup – it usually means AccountRight hit a snag talking to the online service while trying to save the new SMSF, rather than anything you’ve done wrong.

A few quick things to try:

    • Close AccountRight, sign back in, and try creating the SMSF again.
    • If you’re in the browser version, try a different browser (or clear your cache) and re‑enter the fund.
    • Double‑check the details you’re putting in (ABN with no spaces, correct ESA from the provider, BSB and account number).

If it’s still throwing the same error after that, the best bet is to get support to take a closer look behind the scenes. You can:

    Hi Heather06

Totally get that changing an SMSF over to a new ESA can be a bit fiddly in the system. You’re right that you can’t edit the ESA on the existing SMSF. To get around the “name is already in use” message, set up a new SMSF fund using the same ABN, but tweak the fund name slightly (for example, add “(NEW ESA)” to the end), then enter the new ESA and save. Once that’s done, just reassign the employee to this new SMSF fund and stop using the old one.

Thanks Genreve for suggestion.  I am now trying to set the new fund but now getting a message "whoops something has gone wrong, try again later"  Is this something I am doing or is there a known problem?

    Thanks
