Importing MYOB Accounts

I have done this thousands (well, plenty) of times over 20 years. I am importing a text (Tab Delimited) file created in Excel. Evertthing comes up OK, I selected Match All then Import, and the result is "Account Number Cannot be empty".

I've tried it on 2 PCs, I've checked the Excel and Text files and I'm damned if I can see the problem.

Can anyone Help Please?

    Hi Peterll,

That "Account Number Cannot be empty" message usually means MYOB's not spotting an account number in one of the rows (even a sneaky blank row at the end can cause this). Could you double-check if there are any hidden spaces or tabs in the Account number column of your text file? Sometimes exporting to CSV first and then back to TXT cleans up any formatting gremlins.

If it's still stubborn, it's best to reach out to our live chat support through our virtual assistant, MOCA, so they can take a closer look on this.

    Regards,

    Sai

Hi Peterll , are you able to post the import log, plus an extract of the file you are importing, enough to include lines being rejected? Then we may be able to comment further.

Hi Peterll , a couple of comments:

    • the import file is designed for today's AccountRIght, not v19, therefore the first line should have braces ie {} (and nothing else).
    • If you need to import account balances, then format the numbers as general. Excel adds "" around values that contain commas.
    • Your import file contains lots of blank lines. I've made the above two changes and saved a text file from your XLSX file, which is attached. This file does not have the extra blank lines.

Try the import again using this file.

Thanks for that. It worked. I don't understand it. I exported the text file from the file I imported to, then I opened in Excel, inserted lines with more numbers , names and other details (all 5 digit numbers for account numbers) then tried to import it. It failed the first time. I thought the first line braces were the problem, so I removed them and tried again - no luck. Any idea where the extra blank lines could have come from?

Hi Peterll , I'm glad it worked. I can see that each line ends in a CR (carriage return), followed by a CRLF (carriage return and line feed), whereas the text file I created only has a CRLF symbol on each line. But why, I don't know.

PS I use Notepad++ to view text files. Very handy, easy to see non printing characters and many more functions besides.
