Hi Jordin , when AccountRight first went online in 2011, large files performed very badly, and MYOB set threshholds for file sizes. This was burned into users' memories. But the performance of online files has improved a lot since then. I have a client, for example, whose offline file was much more than 1GB in size, who has now upgraded to the online program. When I access their file, mainly for reporting, performance is commensurate with the file size. Plus they get all the benefits of being online. We provide them with a suite of operational reports, which of course were re-created for the online file, and generally work better.
Performance outcomes are a combination of many factors, including the size of the master record lists in your file (accounts, cards, jobs, items, etc.) and the volume and type of all the transactions. Files with large lists, especially items, and large volumes of low value transactions place a greater load on the online infrastructure.
It is true that there is no purge option in the desktop/online program. But there is at least one reliable 3rd party who can purge transactions prior to x date, for a fee. Done regularly (as my client plans to do) this will maintain the performance at the level it was at the time of upgrade.
I strongly suggest you investigate a trial upgrade of your file, whilst keeping the existing file going. That will tell you whether upgrading is going to work for you.
