Hi JSB1
Sure it is temporary - but AccountRight Premier Classic is still working and hasn't been updated with features for a decade or so and people are still using it. I have a client with 10 years of old backups that being in the building industry they need to access - Premier Classic loads and runs in Server 2022 but requires you to be an administrator - security is provided by Windows not the MYOB package.
I will simply load this onto an old Win 7 laptop without internet access - allow it to run in admin mode and all files back to 2006 will be accessible.
My point is we screamed and shouted at MYOB to keep upgrading - they do not listen.
We asked them 'not to turn off logon window pre-populating with your email address' and they ignored - now they are trying to turn this feature back on - and what a mess.
In 30 years of using, installing, advising, coding, developing MYOB seldom listens to an individuals demand to 'don't do something' - so you learn to 'just flow with the changes and adapt to whatever MYOB throws at you.....
MYOB are not suddenly going to roll back these rollouts - as they have probably been 1 year in the planning - however, whilst AccountRight Server Edition SE continues to work as before but not get security and feature upgrades - I am happy with that - we use to be happy with 2 updates a year.
My clients will ring me for advice and likely just stick with 2026.5 SE - until something in the new features aren't available in 2026.5 but are necessary for ATO/Super connectivity - likely to happen.
The Server Edition is the mainstay of remote desktop use of businesses - so deprecating has a whole lot more people screaming - we hope.
Will the PC Edition work running on the server - likely it will - ok - so we may be forced to roll these clients into the PC Edition running on a big RDP server - and the dual install remains SE 2026.5 to access older files.
As for backup - modern AR datafiles do not purge data as of old so a datafile backed up today retains all the data since the start of the file - hence retaining online only 6 months is simply expediency by MYOB and not blowing out their data storage on someone's old files that they cannot purge.
There is a problem with downloading an online backup - I haven't found a way to do this - assuming offline backup is no longer available - is this a problem - not really - if you could download how will you open it - PC Edition 2026.5 and forward doesn't allow offline access - and if you are now on PC Edition 2026.6 and you could download it to your local drive - AR SE 2026.5 can't open it and you cannot roll back to a previous version.
My point is - as always and what I have done for 28 years is roll with the changes ( by the way XERO has no ability to backup/restore/ get a copy of your file what so ever - a major negative for using it yet people move to it without worrying about that).
I am sorry for the rant but I am actually on your side with everything you say - totally but in 28 years the lone complaining client seldom gets heard and it is simply easier to just find a path forward with the changes.
And to actually give MYOB some credence for the changes - protecting clients data has become so complex and requires mandatory security updates at least monthly that to 'not' implement these changes lies you wide open to litigation with scammers circling every data repository to try and get in.
