Final pay - 2 pay runs in one pay period

We run a monthly payroll, paying employees on 12th of the month for the full calendar month.

We are making some employees redundant and wanting to pay redundancy and final leave balance at end of the month.

Can I run two pay runs in one month?

Possible alternative is to run normal pay as being from 1st to 30th of the month, change pay cycle to weekly and have pay period for the 31st. In this scenario, the redundancy should be taxed correctly as an extra pay, but will the annual leave be taxed correctly?

Any solutions would be appreciated.

    Hi homi,

Waiting until the end of the month just to process pay through IRD can be a bit of a hassle, especially since IRD requires you to file within two working days. When MYOB rejects an IRfile, it usually tells you why, and you can find those error details using this link. I also came across an older post that seems related to MYOB pay date settings and why errors can come up, so hopefully that gives you a bit more insight too.

    Cheers,

    Princess

  • We pay a few salaried employees on the 25th of each month for the full month, but myob essentials reject the irfile and won't let me process the file till after the end of month, although IRD requires it to be filed within 2 working days

So are you saying that Business Payroll can;t do multiple payrun periods??

My question would be are the monthly employees set up as monthly pay periods - differing from the normal payrun. This should work fine - even if the payment date is the same.

    Hi Princess

Thanks for your help, the error #104 , i now realised that it was my error the pay on date should have read 25/09/2025. instead of 25/10/25 for the pay period 1/09/25 to 30/09/25

Not sure if it would work for future periods, if i continue to pre pay for the whole month on the 25th of each month before the month ends, it used to work with our exo payroll but now that i have switched to myob essentials payroll.

  • Sorry i also have another question.

We have a mix pay run weekly + once a month salaried staff.

weekly is not a problem but with salaried staff sometimes i have to make a oneoff payment for overtime but the tax calculated comes out short ( i do not want the employee to get hit with an IRD bill at the end of the year) to get around it i have stated accumulating the overtime hours and plug them in with the monthly salary. Is there a way to get the payroll package to look at the YTD earnings and apply tax accordingly?

    Your help is appreciated

    Hi homi,

That’s a really good question. MYOB will automatically work out the PAYE on overtime as long as you’re using an overtime pay item, even if it’s just a one‑off payment. It follows the IRD rules for PAYE based on the employee’s tax code and earnings, so you don’t need to manually check year‑to‑date figures to get the right calculation.

For how you should handle these overtime payments and PAYE in your reports for your specific setup, it’s still best to have a quick chat with your accountant or financial advisor so they can give you advice that suits your business.

    Cheers,

    Princess
