Thanks for your reply and appreciate your suggestions.
I've managed to restore an earlier version of the file and I'm in the middle of reconstructing it (had the sense to take a backup at an earlier stage). Fortunately, only 2-3 hours of re-work (not days).
Quite frustrating and astounding that a bug like this exists.

Agreed, there are hundred of bugs reported (some since 2011) that MYOB have simply chosen to ignore. Unless a bug affects all users or leads to file corruption, they seem to leave it alone rather than fix it.
Fortunately the Account List totals are a display issue only, it won't affect your financial statements. So don't expect a fix.
