Hi Princess
Why on earth did nobody ever say this. I made countless phone calls and spent hours on hold with Myob trying to work out this issue. Then 5 hours yesterday with a myob support person who had to constantly check or research how to do things. Please send me the link to how to actually zero out these pays in Myob Essentials so I can keep for reference in case the ATO ever ask what I have done. It will seem dodgy otherwise.
Hi HoneySandra,
Spending that much time in support lines and not being informed about the STP transition would definitely be a lot to deal with.
What you’ll need to do is:
- Save copies of your payroll reports first, just so you’ve got a record before making any changes.
- Update the old payroll figures so they reflect what should’ve been reported under the old setup, then send a $0 update event and finalise it.
- Move across to the new setup and re-register STP there.
- Update the figures again so they reflect what should be reported under the new setup, then send another $0 update event.
Shella’s post here has the full steps as well: https://community.myob.com/discussions/bus-pay/abn-changed--stp-reporting-issue/866846/replies/866995

Hello Genreve,
- Firstly, my payroll reports were correct as I always recorded them in my offline file first, then entered them into the Online Payroll Essentials and double checked everything matched. The reason I had an online payroll only file was purely for STP and paying super. Everthing else is accounted for in the offline file including recording payroll so it matched always with online payroll.
- If I finalise this old Payroll only file, without zeroing out the figures, it would still create a double income for the employees on STP reporting.
- The MYOB consultant asked me to upgrade my offline file first, then we went to the old online Payroll file and updated all the appropriate info. This is where the duplicatation at the ATO happened. Even though I copied and pasted the old BMS id into the new data file, it still created duplicate employee earnings for the same company. All these unnecessary steps did nothing to create a seamless STP migration.
- The same ABN was used, same employees, everything the same but ATO couldn't see that.
Unfortunately, there is so much conflicting MYOB info. If there is more than one way to do a job - just let us know. If you have to zero out figures (this is a really important one), it should be shouted out loud and clear, but nobody in the dozens of calls and hours on hold told me that had to be done. I was told the Migration team would need to get involved but I didn't speak to them once. The "Payroll specialist" helping me knows less than me. She didn't even know that I will need to finalise the old Payroll file.
Very disappointing, hours and wages lost on my part trying to deal with all this because MYOB is upgrading the file in mid June instead of early July which would have made a lot more sense. Or at least give us 6 months warning, not 2 months before the EOFY and then we are waiting hours on the phone.

Hi HoneySandra,
Thanks for explaining that. If the figures in the old payroll file were already correct, then yes, the step that should’ve been done before finalising it was zeroing out the STP figures first, so the same earnings weren’t reported twice.
I can understand why this has been such a messy process, especially with the mixed info you were given. That zero-out step should’ve been made much clearer much earlier.
