MYOB - paid too much tax

Hi,

I have accidently paid $1000 extra in tax.

The set-up is a family trust.

I have paid all the taxes when taking out my salary and sent it off to ATO using Single Touch Payroll .

How can I allocated the extra $1000 that I paid too much quarter 1? The payment has not been reported to the  ATO.

I am a little bit lost..

Thank you for your patience and support.

It was not withheld from the Aug pay run. It was a duplicate payment.

It is only $1000 and I am happy to pay the extra super and any ATO penalty for being late with the super payment on the $1000.

I have not lodged the BAS yet/

    Hi vegemite,

Thanks for clarifying. I wouldn’t create a payroll entry just to include the $1,000 in Q1.

If it was withheld from an August pay run, check that pay run and your payroll reports first. If it was simply overpaid to the ATO, please check with your accountant or the ATO before recording anything, as this may affect PAYG, super, and STP.

    Thank you for your reply.

I paid the $1000 to my ATO tax account (PAYG) 4 Aug 2026.

Would it complicate things if I generate a payroll entry today and use the August payroll date to make sure that the tax will be included in 1st quarter? I have not lodged the BAS yet.

I do realise that I have to pay extra super and probably a penalty.

What would be the best way to resolve this?

    Hi vegemite,

I understand how confusing this can be. Just to clarify, Single Touch Payroll reports your payroll information to the ATO; it doesn’t transfer the PAYG payment itself.  If an extra $1,000 was withheld from the salary, check the pay run and PAYG figures before making any changes. The correction may need to be made through the next pay or a separate PAYG adjustment, with the updated figures reported through STP.

We also recommend reaching out with your accountant before making changes. You can also visit these helpful articles for detailed guidance: Fixing a pay and ATO’s guidance on repayment of overpaid amounts.

    Regards,
