So from this thread and my recent experience in trying to enter data for my new company, it seems that I can create the company, enter the data and once I exit, or possibly even the next day, its read only? And that my accountant wont be happy either? If so, what product should I be upgrading to as I prefer off line usage and I only have the 2 small companies with no payroll.
Hi CarolD
Are you trying to Register your file? If so, this is unnecessary for Perpetual Licences. You should only need to Activate the file.
The number of files you can have, depends upon what type of Licence you originally purchased. If you are allowed more than one file (default used to be 5 files), then you should be able to Activate your file when you open it after creating it.
If you only have a licence for one file, then you can choose the option to Activate the file later and you will have 90 days to use the file. This is no use if you need to continue using the file which by your description you do. In this case you may be stuck with a subscription web version for the new file.
Cheers

Hi Liz, thanks for your suggestion.. I purchased Accounting V18 which I've used for 6 entities already - I just checked that. Maybe I should delete old files that I no longer require? Is that do-able within the system? No my serial number is already registered and the main company that I set up decades ago functions perfectly fine. The issue is with a new company - maybe it is just 1 too many> I cannot activate as per the methods displayed within V18. I did call in May when I entered the first lot of data for the new company and was told that I took too long to activate it therefore its read only. So yesterday I started a new company file with slightly different name, and that went fine. I could select to activate later, then I re-entered the original data up to May then new data from then on. I mean it took most of the day to do that but that was the only option as I saved "all data". I entered the data to now, but I will need to keep going to year end. I'm trying to avoid having to change accounting software as I am getting too old to deal with new software. It sound like I will be ok for another 89 days then I would have to re-enter the data from 1/7/24. If 5 companies is the limit, how do I delete old companies?

Hi CarolD
Ah- thanks for the extra info. You need to re-use an old file rather than just delete these. The File ID is encoded within the file, so deleting these won't reset your history of creating files and the new file still won't activate as you've reached your limit. I take a copy of an unneeded file from a couple of years ago with minimal info and delete everything and then rollover to the current year and then enter transactions for the new business. You need to check all of your setup to make sure old business names don't go out on emails, etc but otherwise it works perfectly well. Unfortunately, this means you will have to enter data from 1/7/24 again but you should be good to go from hereon.
Cheers
