AccountRight 2026.2 – Why can I no longer back up my company file to my computer?

Since updating to AccountRight 2026.2, I’ve noticed that I can no longer save my company file backups to my local computer. The software now seems to only allow backups to be stored in the cloud, which doesn’t suit our business requirements.

For compliance and internal policy reasons, we need to retain local backups exactly as we have always done prior to this upgrade.

Can anyone explain why this change was introduced, and how I can continue saving backups locally?
Is there a setting I need to adjust, or has the option been removed entirely in 2026.2?

Any guidance or workaround would be greatly appreciated — we rely on local backups as part of our standard file management and audit processes.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, As I can no longer take an offline backup of my data (as of 17/6/26), does this mean that if MYOB get hacked, I will likely lose all my data? How do I ensure that my data is safe? How can I transfer my data to an external backup location - as recommended by the Australian Cyber Security Centre.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) recommends that external and offline backups be completely segregated or disconnected from your main computer network when not in use. This strategy ensures that if your primary systems are hit by ransomware or destructive malware, your backups remain uncorrupted and recoverable.

How can we download the backup from offline to store locally?

This is about controlling our own backups.  MYOB do not have a great trust track record and we want to be in control of our own backups not just told you have it under control.

    Hey CarolineG

The offline version of MYOB AccountRightdesktop is built on technology that no longer meets today’s performance standards. The removal of offline functionality in AccountRight means that offline backups are no longer available with the software, only online backups. More information about online backups can be found here.

    Hi Amanda

I note that online backups are stored in the cloud for 6 months, what happens to our backups if we require a copy of our online back that was dated 7 months ago, can we still get access to it?

    Hi Amanda,

Thanks for your response — I’ve read the full post you linked, however it doesn’t address the core issue we’re experiencing.

Your explanation doesn’t clarify why an online user accessing an AccountRight online file through the desktop app can no longer perform a local backup. Our company has used AccountRight online (not offline) from the moment it became available, and until the 2026.5 update we were always able to create local backups directly from the desktop version.

    Could you please confirm:

How can an online AccountRight file be backed up locally now — either via the MYOB web browser version or the AccountRight desktop application while the file is online?

We need to maintain local backups for compliance and internal policy, so understanding the correct process under 2026.25is essential.

Thanks in advance for your clarification.

  • This doesn't resolve the issue of being able to save a backup locally.  The option suggested on your link no longer exists. You cannot choose "Enable offline backups" from the Security tab. It is not clear how to save a local backup - please explain.

Thanks for asking about this Carline - I thought I was going crazy when my backup wouldn't process as it normally did.

    Hi CarolineG

You can continue to backup locally by changing your Security Preferences.  Below is where to find out more about the new backup process.  Hope this helps you.
